How does an insulin dependent travel with insulin on the train or plane?

There probably is a refrigerator on board, but he would need ice or ice packs when leaving the train or plane. Would they allow the insulin in the fridge because of liability reasons?|||I have flown many times and you must not put your insulin in your checked baggage for 2 reasons

1. because the Temperature In the baggage hold isn't really regulated and can vary to extremes

2. if they loose your bags you loose your insulin

you should carry it in your on board luggage and also carry enough strips, injections etc, also take your prescriptions, you will also need a letter from your dr stating that you are carrying sharps and medication. most airlines will not let you store in the fridge

i would advise the same for a train

you can buy Frio packs that you can carry the insulin in to keep them cool. you can store insulin out of the fridge for periods of time for travelling unless you are in a hot car or going to somewhere where it is really hot|||Sounds like your question has been pretty well answered, but I'll add a little more ... I've taken insulin for 30 years, fly fairly often international and domestic, and spend a lot of time in warm climates (Ecuador and Florida). I don't worry about refrigerating my in-use bottles of insulin at all (while traveling or otherwise). I just try to keep them from getting hot (in the sun, etc.). Extra bottles, I try to keep refrigerated at home, but again, in transit, I don't worry about it. And I haven't had any problems.

The official line from the packaging is 28 days, which is just an estimate -- like with food, the chemical reactions that cause deterioration happen faster with every degree warmer you get (rather than being a case of being in or out of the fridge). If insulin gets really hot, then it can be ruined right away, but generally in the month or so that you use a bottle of insulin, it should be fine out of the fridge with reasonable care.

I've found this attitude has allowed me a lot of freedom (in traveling, Peace Corps, hiking, camping, etc.), and I always have my insulin handy. Sometimes I leave insulin unrefrigerated for months, and only once in a great while will I find a bottle of NPH that seems to be bad (the white powder sticks to the glass and doesn't dissolve). So I throw it out.

Also, while flying, I've never been asked for a doctor's note to justify my syringes or insulin; the airline and security people usually don't even mention it if they see it in my carry-on bags, and if they do I just say I'm diabetic.

Good luck!|||Don't rely on them to keep his insulin refrigerated...flight attendants are skittish about that stuff and probably won't. Keep in mind that insulin is fine at room temperature for at least 3 weeks, so you don't have to constantly refrigerate it. However, if it will be exposed to warm temperatures at any point (outdoor activities), then invest in a Frio cooling wallet. Just type in "frio wallet" in the search engine and you'll find several vendors. They are very easy to use and keep insulin at a nice room temperature even when it's hot.|||Depends how long the journey is, and how long you're going away for.

Insulin is good for 28 days out of refrigeration.

So i don't really worry about it, unless i'm going on a really really long journey, and i'll be there for a really long time.

It doesn't really need to be refrigerated at all if you're only going away for the weekend, or one / two weeks.|||Frio packs are the best if you are going someplace warm. Otherwise, insulin can be at room temperature for about 28 days. My son is diabetic and we just take along the kit that he has and have never had any problems with flying.|||you can go to a pharmacy and buy a travel bag for insulin,it comes with a freezer back and is good for several(6-8 ) hours. I hope this helps !|||GET ADVICE AND MEDICATION FOR ALL CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS ABSOLUTELY FREE : BY WORLD EXPERT 鈥?DR. R.C JHA
