What is the realism of actually getting shot down in a military plane today?

In the air force or navy, or any military branch, what are the chances of a fighter pilot getting shot down by an enemy plane or engaging in a dogfight? If the pilots arent really fighting when there stationed on an aircraft carrier for example near iraq, then what are they doing?|||Depends on the plane, cargo plains are flying so fly up in the sky they are safe. Fighter jets are so fast... The chances are close to zero. THey have flares that shoot out if a rocket locks on to mid lead the rocket.|||VC would set up traps to get birds fly over a certain area and them bring them down with AK 47's. German civilians would shoot at us on occasion while flying nap of the earth. Once the pilot circled a buck that was being chased into mown cornfield. As he flew a tight circle just over the tree's the buck ran in a circle below us. The Germans hunters numbered about 30. Several of them shot at us. One hit the UHF shark fin on the bottom of the OH 58.

There are more deaths in training than in combat. IF you think that taking off and landing from a Carrier is safe at ANY time YOU are either under the age of 10 or NUTS!!!!!!

did a bit of time in the air, know a pilot or 2. Will be meeting with 1 tonite when he comes in for a 17 hour layover.|||In the war we are fighting today there are no enemy aircraft no more ground to air missiles so no dogfights and no getting shot down. Now lets move on to air force, navy, and marine pilots their main job is ground Attack.
